The Cox Plate is held each year at the
Moonee Valley Racecourse which is located only a few minutes away from
the centre of Melbourne. The Moonee Valley Committee decided to run
the weight for age race in honour of the Tracks founder, Sam Cox. Positioned
between the Caulfield Cup, Melbourne Cup and the Victoria Derby, the
Cox Plate quickly became a horse race of importance.
As Australasia's most prestigious race, the Cox Plate
is now part of the World Series Racing Championship which is horse racing's
Grand Prix circuit. The series features thirteen races in eleven countries
and the Cox Plate is the only southern hemisphere race to be included.
The Cox Plate is now regarded by many as the 'the greatest
two minutes in sport' and with prize money of over $3,000,000 it is easy
to see why so many great horses contest for the title each year..
