2009 Caulfield Cup
The Caulfield Cup is renowned as one of the toughest
2400m handicap horse races in Australia. The race is held in October each
year during the famous and much anticipated Victorian Spring Racing Carnival.
The first
Caulfield Cup run was in 1879
and was won by a horse named Newminster. The race has now grown into one
of Australia's toughest handicap races and is run over 2400 meters. With
the race prize money now worth over 2 million dollars it is an important
lead up race to the
Melbourne Cup.
The cup is held each year at the Caulfield Racecourse
which is located in Melbourne's South East and only a few minutes away
from the centre of Melbourne.
It is a race which has been contested by some of
the best horses in Australia and has long been renowned as the "first
race" of Australia's most popular betting double: Caulfield Cup ->
Melbourne Cup.
