The WS Cox Plate is a Group 1 event and is considered the weight-for-age championship of Australasia and carries Australia’s richest weight-for-age prize of $3 million and almost 10 times that amount is bet on the race. I can guarantee you that 3 million punters will be in tears if Shoot Out wins. Only 14 horses are able to run in the Cox Plate, with fields generally smaller than the maximum of 14. All the horses have group one form and you can line up their betting from races like the Turnbull or Memsie.
This year all the hero money will be on Shoot Out after the tragic news that the jockey Stathi katsidis was found dead in his home two days ago. I hate to say it but it would be fabulious if Corey Brown could win it for Stathi, just like Damien Oliver won the Melbourne Cup for his brother who was killed in a race fall only weeks before the cup.
I hope and pray that Shoot Out beats So You Think by a nose, but I don’t think it is going to happen. What ever the result it will be a sad Cox Plate in 2010 and I think the winner will be humbled by the passing of one of Queensland’s finest. RIP.
WOW, the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington is a seriously hot race this year with numerous winning chances and champions in their own right. Betting will be fantastic and if ever you wanted to try betting “in running” for the first time, then this is the race to do it in. Shocking is the Flemington specialist, might win but but he only at odds of 5-1. Moudre, if he can get a run, should run close to favourite and if the scratchings appear, can win the race to be sure of starting in the Caufield Cup. Its ‘D-Day’ for Shoot Out. The Big Flemington track should suit and he gets his chance to stand up as a genuine Cox Plate contender. Unlike most punters we think Typhoon Tracy will stand up and show she can run a strong 2000 meters, so back her in the Cox Plate before this run for the extra big odds on betting available!
It’s not a one horse race as the betting odds suggest with So You Think at odds on to win. Last years Cox Plate winner is certainly looking good but there will have to be a point where the horse blows a bit while gaining fitness and this could be the day. It certainly won’t be during the Cox Plate. Last year the race was dominated by Weekend Hussler, but in 2010 there is no similar entry. Heart of Dreams won the race two years ago and may be looking to repeat. Largo Lad had a slashing run at huge odds to win last start and will be similar odds. Cox Plate at Monee Valley - Betting Odds Open
I first saw Kingston Town win the Cox Plate many years ago as a young kid when growing up in Melbourne. The 2009 Cox Plate is a great race and very exciting. Perhaps this is because its before the Melbourne Cup and after the Caulfield Cup.
As I write this from Silicon Valley, please share a moment before the Cox Plate horserace to remember the great Phar Lap – who won the Cox Plate – and died in Menlo Park, California.
